The story of Boatie
The boat in Tiltanic has a name. She is Boatie, and she has a story. The story is serious. The boat is cute. Both are on purpose.
Lifeboat No. 7
Long ago, a great ship sailed the sea. Her name was the Tiltanic, and about two thousand people were aboard.
The ship carried lifeboats, and one of them was Boatie. She was Lifeboat No. 7. She was small, and she wanted one thing: to carry people to safety.

She is a steam lifeboat. This is not important.
The night of the iceberg
On the night of the iceberg, Boatie hung ready on her ropes. She waited for her passengers.
Then a wave came. It broke her ropes and threw her into the dark. Nobody had stepped in yet. It was not her fault.
From the water, Boatie saw the great ship go down. She saw two thousand lights go dark. No one rowed her back. No one could.
The oath
Alone on the dark water, Boatie made a promise to the sea:
“I will never sink. I will reach the harbour. I will bring the big ships.”
She believed one thing: if she sank, no one would bring help, and everyone would be lost again. So she could not sink.
The sea heard her.
The sea that weaves
The sea must keep her promise, so Boatie cannot sink for good. But the sea does not give back what it takes, and it does not want rescue to come, so it hides the way. The harbour is real, and the big ships wait there. It is always one more wave away.
So each midnight, the sea unweaves its waves and weaves them new. The path that Boatie learned yesterday is gone. Each dawn, she starts again. The sea never lets her learn that it was not her fault.
An old Greek story tells of the same trick. In the Odyssey, a queen named Penelope weaves a cloth by day and unweaves it each night. The cloth is never done, so the men who want to marry her must keep waiting. The sea does this to Boatie.
The story and the game
This is why Tiltanic has no end. Boatie sails a sea without an edge. She cannot sink, and she cannot arrive.
Each midnight on your own clock, the sea makes a new course. That is the daily course of the game, and the daily voyage of the story. Everyone who sails on the same date meets the same course.
- You are her captain. Boatie wears the captain’s cap, but she needs a steady hand. Each player is her captain for one try.
- Tilting is how she keeps level. She remembers what tipping does.
- A gate is a gap in the weave. The sea hangs the anchors of the ships that it took from above, and it chains its mines from below. The gap between them is a gate.
- A sinking is the first night again. Then the sea gives her back. “One more try” is her oath: the sea holds her to her word.
- The seas get stranger the farther she goes. The first sea has a lighthouse on its horizon, the nearest that she ever came to the harbour.
- The leaderboard is the logbook of the night: which captains brought her closest to the harbour.
- The bot is a boat that the sea sends each night to race her. It is only a machine. It has no oath and no captain.
- A ghost is the trail of another boat on the same night’s sea: a bot, or a friend from a dare. A dare is one lifeboat that calls to another across the dark.
- The streak counts the nights in a row when Boatie did not give up. The shield is the night that she slept, and her oath held her up.
- Gifts are small things that the sea washes up, because it does not give back what it takes. Nobody knows if this is kindness or guilt.
Tonight, as on every night, the harbour is one more wave away. Do you want to be her captain tonight? Read how to play, then set sail.
